Q: How much would a 1963 Ford Thunderbird hub cap cost ?
i am not looking to buy one, just solve a discussion at work

A: I’m not a T-bird expert… but I know there are tons of parts available for these cars. I checked a few places… and it looks like… generally speaking… $50 or so. You can get them used on eBay for $50 or less and also as a brand new reproduction from any one of a number of parts suppliers across the US for about $45-$50 depending on the hubcap (I think there were 2 or 3 different caps… but if you really want to know, contact a parts supplier, I didn’t look for that long). Reproduction wheels are far more costly… a stock replacement steel wheel will run about $125 while reproduction wire wheels cost over $600. Each. Hope that settles the dispute… but if not? Contact Larry’s Thunder Bird & Mustang Parts:

www.larrystbird.com

Also, I did find a set of NOS hubcaps at: http://www.tbirdparts.com
Price? $600 for a set of 4 NOS originals.

Q: is ford behaving in socially responsible manner when it is continue to make SUVs?
i want good and helpful discussion please

A: What Vipassana said. I wouldn’t change what’s making profit for me. Also almost every automaker produces SUV’s not just Ford.

Q: Do you think the discussion of politics would be different if?
Harold Ford was the first legitimate black Presidential Candidate instead of Obama . . .?

A: I don’t really know Harold Ford that well besides the fact that he is a political figure in Tennessee. But, I do believe that the discussion of politics would be different if he was the first legitimate Black Presidential Candidate.

Q: Is this why foreign cars (Owners) are beating the pants off Ford, General Motors Etc..?
A TALE OF TWO COMPANIES

A Japanese company (Toyota) and an American company (Ford) decided to have a canoe race on the Missouri River . Both teams practiced long and hard to reach their peak performance before the race.

On the big day, the Japanese won by a mile.

The Americans, very discouraged and depressed, decided to investigate the reason for the crushing defeat. A management team made up of senior management was formed to investigate and recommend appropriate action.

Their conclusion was the Japanese had 8 people rowing and 1 person steering, While the American team had 8 people steering and 1 person rowing.

Feeling a deeper study was in order, American management hired a Consulting company and paid them a large amount of money for a second opinion. They advised, of course, that too many people were steering the boat, while not enough people were rowing.

Not sure of how to utilize that information, but wanting to prevent another loss to the Japanese, the rowing team’s management structure was totally reorganized to 4 steering supervisors, 3 area steering superintendents and 1 assistant superintendent steering manager. They also implemented a new performance system that would give the 1 person rowing the boat greater incentive to work harder. It was called the ‘Rowing Team Quality First Program,’ with meetings, dinners and free pens and a certificate of completion for the rower. There was discussion of getting new paddles, canoes and other equipment, extra vacation days for practices and bonuses.

The next year the Japanese won by two miles.

Humiliated, the American management laid off the rower (a reduction in workforce) for poor performance, halted development of a new canoe, sold the paddles, and cancelled all capital investments for new equipment. The Money saved was distributed to the Senior Executives as bonuses and the next year’s racing team was “out-sourced” to India .

Sadly, the End.

However, sad, but oh so true! Here’s something else to think about: Ford Has spent the last thirty years moving all its factories out of the US, Claiming they can’t make money paying American wages. Toyota has spent the last thirty years building more than a dozen plants inside the US

The last quarter’s results:

Toyota makes 4 billion in profits while Ford racked up 9 billion in losses.

A: And to think…Ford and GM actually taught the Japanese how to build and run a car company…..(In the 1940s)

Yes I will agree that the middle management thing choaked the American car companies when Japanese cars were a curse word..a crappy car if you will… American car companies are now paying for the bloat.

The tariffs are there to keep the Japanese from dumping cars on the american market.. The americans can’t compete with american built cars in Japan due to their size (Ford actually sells Australian, Asian and European built cars in Japan)

But as someone said, the American car companies told their people they were gonna take care of them after they retire and this is what you are getting today causing some of those losses.. As someone said, the Japanese don’t have that in their factories (instead of financing retirement on their own, they finaced it using 401ks).. plus they build most cars in areas where Union presence is low…. I’m actually waiting on the UAW to keep pushing for a vote… no matter what the workers say, Unions can and will push.. if not the car maker, they will get the parts suppliers

So if I scrapped everything like Toyota had in 1945 and be given money to rebuild and such, yeah we could compete..

Also if the car companies would not have sold their outside interests years ago, they could have made money too
(Ford used to make TVs and Refigerators as well as Tractors)

Q: Ford Escape AWD vs FWD?
First of all, I know a heck of a lot about 4×4’s so I’m no dummy. Secondly I’m not interested in 4×4 vs AWD for this discussion. I know the difference. I’m interested in power to four wheels versus two wheels.

My ex-wife bought a 2006 Ford Escape. She claims it’s a 4×4. I looked at the rear end to see the drive train and found no rear drive axle and no rear end. Where the rear end is suppose to be is a big hole in the frame. I’ve seen 4×4 Escapes and they all have the rear diff. So I’m confused.

My daughter says there is a switch on the dash that says something like “auto” or “manual”. She was vague as she is too young to observe much.

Normally I don’t care as the vehicle isn’t mine. However they are going up into the Sierra Nevada’s this weekend and the weather is extremely bad. I anticipate chain controls and potentially a shut down of the freeways. They have to go, it’s an emergency.

Can someone clarify the confusion? Thanks.

A: The Escape may be equipped with AdvanceTrac which is a four-wheel traction control system (in case of slipping or hyrdroplaning). The system would be operable all the time unless deactiviated on the dash, but it wouldn’t be an “Auto/Manual” switch. That sounds like an AC switch.

Q: During lunch, the topic of discussion turns (as it so often does) to history. 10pts.?
During lunch, the topic of discussion turns (as it so often does) to history. You try to figure out which president survived the most attempts on his life. While some people bring up the attempted assassinations of Jackson, the Roosevelts, Ford, and Reagan, your mind goes down another track. You stick up your finger eruditely and declare, “While it may be impossible to determine exactly which president almost encountered death most often in his lifetime, one of the leading candidates certainly has to be our first president, George Washington. Why he was almost killed six times in just one U.S. History home-study lesson! He almost died in a clearing in the backwoods, on an icy river, at home from tuberculosis, at Braddock’s defeat in 1755, at Fort Necessity, and

a. “on the Plains of Abraham.”
b. “at Fort Ticonderoga.”
c. “on the Forbes expedition.”
d. “at the citadel of Louisbourg.”

A: sINCE YOU’RE MAKING A STATEMENT, UNTIL YOU ASK A QUESTION, DON’T HOLD YOUR BREATH.

Q: ford MDA dec 2006?
can you help me. i need to analyze the business summaries and management’s discussion and analysis.

i cant find this. please help me find it and analyze it. first one to give me the site and help me gets 10 points and is greatly appreciated…thanks.

A: If you go to Ford’s website and go to the investor relations link, get the latest form 10-K filing — for last’s year’s filing, the MDA was Item #7.

Good luck

Q: When you see an SUV, what are your thoughts/opinions of the driver?
I hate to generalize, but for the sake of this discussion, let’s hear people’s generalizations…I am interested in how people view those who drive large SUV’s (e.g. Lincoln Navigator, Ford Expedition).

How would you “stereotype” the average SUV driver?

A: I THINK THEY WORKED THEIR BUNS OFF TO GET WHAT THEY’VE GOT. I’M 24 I OWN 5 CARS. I DON’T BRAG. I’M JUST INTO CARS. TRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUST ME IT TAKES ALOT TO HAVE WHAT I’VE GOT. MY NEWEST IS A USED 2001 DEVILLE. ITS NOT A BIG S.U.V. BUT STILL THE STATUS SYMBOL. I DIDN’T GET IT FOR THAT. I GOT IT JUST CUZ, CUZ. I JUST TOOK A SYMIOTICS CLASS AT SCHOOL. I’D SUGGEST YOU’D DO THE SAME.

Q: Can a 1997 Ford F350X1 tow a 20,000 pound 5th wheel without ruining the transmission?
I have 20,000 pound 5th wheel travel trailer. I am looking to buy a truck to tow it. Can a 1997 F350 with a 7.3X1 engine along with a 5 speed transmission, tow my 5th wheel up a incline without tearing the transmission or engine out of the truck. The present owner of the truck says that it will handle the 5th wheel up an incline without any trouble. I would like to be sure before I continue the discussion with him. The truck has 250,000 miles on it. Thanks for your help.
If the Ford F350 diesel, has a 6 speed manual transmission with the granny gear, and a 3.73 rear end, will it handle the 20,000 lb. 5th wheel?? Do I need to look at a Ford F450 to be safe?

A: It depends on the cab configuration, rear end and if it is a 4×4. A regular cab 2 wheel drive with a 4.10 rear end will tow a 5th wheel maximum weight 14,400 Lbs. A 4×4 will tow 500 lbs. less beacause of the extra weight of the transfer case. Subtract anothe 500 lbs. if it is an extended or crew cab. Another 500 lbs. less if it is a dually beacause of the extra weight of the extra long rear axle and two extra tires. As ypu can see that truck wasn’t meant to tow a 20,000 5th Wheel. I’m not saying it won’t, it just isn’t rated to. If it has a 3.73 rear end the answer is NO NO NO.

Q: May we have a civil and intelligent discussion of labor unions, please and thank you?
I realize that many of you have a generalized dislike of labor unions and there are, in my humble opinion, some reasons for this.

But I think that most of your dislike may be based misconceptions fostered by corporations who will try to influence you for their own gain.

You will argue that unions have destroyed our industries ect. But there is more to the story than that.

My father was a coal miner in West Virginia in the 1930’s He dug the coal and was paid by the ton . Wages were low and the work hard and dangerous. He was provided cheap rent of a little house and the company provided a good school for my older brother and sister. The company even provided a doctor for them. Not bad you say. Not bad if you wanted to work until you were too old to dig anymore and then depend on your children to feed and house you.

The United Mine Worker Union, after a long and bloody struggle, managed to force the mine owners to improve safety (Dad actually carried the canary in the cage to test for gas. Canary die you better run). And wages were increased, costing the company some money but they still survived.

The point here is that even after the Unionization of the mining industry, the coal companies stayed in business and still make money. The miners were certainly not transformed into limo riding fat cats but they did get a better deal. Their lives were improved, not rich but better off. The stock holders were mad because their dividends was lower but too bad.

My next door neighbor retired after 37 years at Ford. He was the highest paid union employee at the plant when he retired. He was a “floor electrican”, master electrican and his pay was $33.50 per hour, plus health insurance and retirement.

The point here is that an auto worker could earn enough money to own a modest home, send his kids to college and have a dignified retirement in old age. What is wrong with a man going to work everyday for over 30 years, taking a annual paid vacation, having insurance for his family and having a decent working class life?

The ability of a man to earn a reasonable wage is not the reason for the demise of our industrial base. Corporations realized that they could have products made in other lands which had very low wages and none of the safety requirements that any worker is entitled to. They moved out of greed.

The problem of off shoring jobs and low wages in this country is as much your problem is it is for labor union members.

Try to learn the real history of labor in our country. Or soon you will go the way of the union member, into unemployment and poverty.

Good luck with your working life.

A: All the major unions, such as the one you belong to, have just become defenders of the socialist machine, thug-like and corrupt. I can see how somebody would have a favorable opinion of their union when they get paid $30 an hour for pushing a broom, but look at the bigger picture, look at the damage that has been done to the auto industry for example, or the teachers unions.

Q: A couple of months ago there was some discussion re: “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion”. Having not read
any of these comments until recently, I’d like to reopen the subject: “Is there not still alot of influence from this SPURIOUS, (since I consider them such from my limited study) on the world even today”?
I consider its first being publish in 1905, (in Russian–
Golvinski) and translated into English about 1920.
Hitler referred to it in his “Mein Kamph” (sp?), and later on had it republished all over Gemany and other countries by the
1000s.
Even Henry Ford was influenced by the English version, considering it viable and published a newspaper re:it in the early ’20s (until he had to cease and desist–or be punished by law).
Of course Hitler’s WW I I decimation of European Jews, (I believe) was implemented because of his believing “:The Protocols…” was true.
So I ask the above question because I veritably believe this dastardly hoax/spurious production is still doing damage today to most of the civilised world.
Am anxious to get input from those knowledgeable on subject.
First 2 answerers w/in 10 min–I thought I was saying it was fake and SPURIOUS–are you disagreeing with me?
Am I missing something?

The 4 answers I have received thus far only support what was in my original question–that the Protocols ARE fake, spurious, and a complete fabrication from some devious mind.

Can someone clarify this for me??

A: I think a lot of people are like the person above who answered, saying that he hadn’t read your “rant”. You are right that this is a fabrication and a hoax that has done an incredible amount of damage over the years. This article called it the beginning of contemporary conspiracy theory literature, which guarantees its popularity! It covers various uses of the book over the years, up to the present. Other websites I looked at are usually groups pointing out its invalidity with regards to their own group.
