Q: Help settle a discussion.?
1984 Chevrolet Suburban 6.3 Diesel 4×4
700R4 Transmission.

Customer Complaint: Took off from a stop, vehicle ran real high in 1st gear, backed off pedal to allow it to shift, it fell out of gear and never went back into any gear. No gear engagement foward or reverse. Line pressure ok.

I just started disassemblin this 700R4 today, and got into a discussion with someone about posibilities, and he and I disagree, so, since automatic transmissions are not my specialty by any means, I need some advice so I know if I am right or if I need to go tell him he is right.

Found the Accumulator spring to be broken in half. I also think that a broken 1st/reverse band could cause the problem.

He says brroken accumulator spring would not stop it from enaging in gear, and that if the 1st/reverse band wer gone, it would just start off in 2nd gear and drive ok.

So, will a broken accumulator spring cause no gear engagment and would a bad 1st/reverse band cause no gear enagement?

Thanks for your help
Sorry, that was 6.2 Diesel engine, not 6.3

A: sorry to be you.go tell him hes right.the truck would just start off in second and bypass right by first.

Q: Are Japanese cars worth a try?
ive owned a 2000 chevy cavalier, one of the most crappiest sedans chevrolet has produced. crappy A/C, no power-locks or windows, have had to repair it every 2 months or so for the last 4 years (bought it 6 years ago). got about 90,000 km. mainly on local roads.

so anyway, is a new-model Japanese car worth a try? older models rust easily, can the same be said of years 2000 +?

is it true that Japanese cars fare worse when it comes to crash safety performance?

recommend any good sites for this kind of discussion?

any help is greatly appreciated.

A: OK,if you wanted power windows and locks why did you buy a car that didn’t have them?I really don’t believe you had that many problems with the vehicle, people tend to exaggerate when they have a few problems.I have owned quite a few GM and Chrysler vehicles and never had any major problems with them, some have gone over 200,000 miles and had a Dodge Ram diesel go over 400,000 miles. But I take care of my vehicles with regular oil changes and maintenance and when I see a problem developing I take care of it right away.I believe a lot of people don’t take care of their vehicles and then blame the auto makers. The GM,Ford and Chrysler vehicles are just as reliable as any Japanese car if taken care of properly.I believe Toyota recalled more vehicles last year than GM,Ford and Chrysler did together, now the Tundra has a major camshaft problem and has over 70 service bulletins on it.Go to http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/20.
