Q: Car Questions?
I’m making up a test for my dad as a joke about cars. I’m looking for some questions to put on the test about the parts of a car. Questions about filters, tires, brake pads, exhaust, bearings, belts, shocks, etc. It really can be about anything.

If you have any good ones, post them with the answers, too please. Thanks so much.

Q: car questions.?
My dad bought me a car, and wanted mw to change the title into my name. If that’s the case does that mean the car is paid off already?

A: Not necessarily.
If your dad has the title than it probably is paid off.
However, if there is still a balance on the loan than the bank/financial instution will probably be the one holding the title. If the bank has the title, you will need to go to your DMV and they will issue a notice to the bank asking to send the title to them temporarily so they can change the name on the title.
Hope this helps.

Q: Will someone explain these car questions i have?
I want to buy a car but i have some questions:

1. When you look at the mileage, does it tell you how many miles the car has driven or how much it has left to drive

2. Do you want the mileage to be high or low when you first buy it? (High: 15,000 or Low: 200 or ExtraLow: 10) Which is more preferable?

A: You don;t seem to know much about cars . I strongly advise you bring along a friend who knows how to tangle with low life used car salesmen
Please i’m not kidding don’t go there alone and never give them your credit card first off or anything like that.CAUTION

Q: Hooking up a amplifier for a car questions?
Hello! Quick question. When hooking up a 4 channel car amp do I run speaker wire from the amp DIRECTLY to the car’s speakers or does it go back to the receiver?

Thank you!

A: The reciever should be totally disconnected from the speakers. Then run the amp outputs DIRECTLY to the speakers. Run the reciever outputs to the amps inputs.

If you didn’t change out the speakers, you should have.

Q: For car buying questions, how many respondents are actually the car company in disguise?
I was wondering if Yahoo tests the validity of the answers provided by respondents to car buying questions i.e. are these people really speaking from experience or are they telling me to buy a certain car brand because they actually work for that car company? planning on buying a car, and searching for car buyer feedback, but some of these answers seem specious at best.

A: There is definitely a mix of both. It’s unfortunate to see answers like “You have 3 days to return a car” because there is no truth to that. There are of few answerer’s, myself included, who try to look at as many questions as possible to look at the answers. Although no one knows everything about cars, it’s not usually to hard to see the bogus answers. I always give thumbs up to any answer that I feel is correct to help the asker when it comes time to following the advice.

There are a few people that are very knowledgeable in the buying and selling category, such as Fire4511, Jay, and Ray. I seem to give them a lot of thumbs up, however there are also answerer’s that pop in here and there with very educated answers, which also get thumbs up.

This is a great question, and no, Yahoo does not test the validity of answers, but you can use thumbs down as well as even report a poster, locking them out of that particular question. This question deserves a star.

Q: Are bigger wheels in the front of a soapbox car faster? And other soapbox car related questions?
For all of these questions I am looking how it effects speed and handling
1) Are bigger wheels in the front of a soapbox car faster?
2) Where should the weight be placed for better speed?
3) Does aerodynamics have a big effect and is it worth the extra weight to put panels on the side to make it more aerodynamic?
4) Advantages and dis advantages of have rubber verse metal wheels?

A: 1) bigger wheels means that the same time it takes to rotate, a smaller wheel will have made several turns. Smaller wheels will give better acceleration, but larger wheels will provide more speed. But for the front, I’d go with small and big ‘uns in the back. Smaller wheels will turn easier.
2) Too much weight on the nose will produce under-steer, not turning sharp enough. Too much weight over the back will produce oversteer, losing control and coming to a painful crash. Ideally, you want a 50-50 weight balance. This will provide better stability and handling, but for a saopbox car, I wouldn’t be too concerned about it.
3) Aerodynamics are a huge advantage, especially when you have no engine. You want a sloping nose, and no real big changes in the shape. Side panels will benifit you, I’d go with something lightweight like particle board.
4) Rubber wheels will probably weigh less, and provide more grip. Metal wheels will provide less rolling resistance though, probably getting you off the line faster.
-I’m no soapbox expert, but I hope this helps somewhat!

Q: Car questions about maybe installing a sun roof and buttons on the steering wheel?
Ive recently gotten a 2008 4Runner and it does not have a sun roof or the buttons on the steering wheel to control the radio. Obviously they are not necessities but they would be nice to have. Does anyone know if it is possible to have these things put into your car by somewhere other than toyota and how much would this type of thing cost? Thank you.
Thank you for the info guys. looks like its not going to happen lol

A: The sun roof isn’t a good idea as the possibility of an after market installation leaking are nearly 100%. The wheel will be very expensive as all the wiring for the buttons will have to be run plus the airbag comes into play. I’d talk to Toyota about whether it’s even feasible or not. If the truck isn’t wired for the wheel the wiring is a real bear.

Q: Anyone notice that there are more foreign car questions about problems on yahoo?
Scan through the list yourself. You will notice there are more foreign cars with problems then american if you go by years of the vehicle. The foreign cars are newer models then the american ones you see. Yes there are lots of american cars with problems but notice the year and how old they are, most are pre 2000. Any old car no matter what the make is going to have some issues.

A: Yes I have! Maybe it is because rice burners are junk? LOL
Bet I get a lot of thumbs down on that remark.

Q: questions to ask when buying a used car?
I found an ad in the paper of someone selling a 2001 Impala SE. Before I go and check out the car myself, I was going to ask some questions about the car. What questions should i ask? I already plan about asking about the condition of the car in and out, mileage, how many owners, if it was involved in any accidents and if they replaced any parts or if any parts need replacing.

A: You’re on the right track. Also, before you go check out this website. Here you can see what these types of vehicles are going for and also check out comparable ones. Good luck!

For Example Im trying to install a car horn and i need help looking for a website that offers that info thanks!

A: chilton`s.com put into search engine… make for car and instaalling horn!

Q: Can someone help me with a few car audio questions?
Looking to replace the stock speakers in my girlfriend’s car, a 2001 VW Jetta. I am looking to replace the two front speakers and the two rear speakers.

Question #1 is do I need to disconnect the tweeters separately or will they be disconnected when the stock speakers are taken out?

#2. How do I find out what the stock system has in terms of Watt output (if i said that correctly)? Should I find speakers that are the same, or will any do?

Any other info that may be useful would be great.

A: the tweeters would probably have to be uninstaalled seperately

Q: Car questions-when I took it on the Highway, the stiring wheel started shaking-what does that mean?
A friend is letting me borrow his car, as I have a 600 mile drive, but I am nervous about the car both because of this shaking and it is a Grand Cheroke Laredo and I think it will inhale the gas and be very expensive. Please advise. Is this jeep a 6 or 8 engine? And what does the shaking mean?
Sorry, I meant to write steering wheel.
It’s late and I’m tired.

A: Could be a tire out of balance, a belt busted, loose rim, bent rim, bad tie rod, or even a broken rotor… some of these items can get more serious and cause a wreck.. Definitely get it checked before going so far!!!

Q: When purchasing a used car, what are the critical questions that should be asked?
The car in question is a Mitsubishi Gallant 2001. Include in answer what other major observations, if any, should be made.

A: First, regardless of where you found this car, make sure you give it a thorough inspection.

Check for body damage, rust, a musty or moldy smell, mismatched paint on different body panels, check that all doors/hood/trunk open and shut without binding and fit in their jams correctly. These are all signs of serious body or frame damage. If you find any of the above, make sure you get proof of what happened or walk away.

Next, find out about the car’s mechanical components by test driving the vehicle. Check all the systems of the car (power windows, locks, A/C, heater, radio, etc.) to make sure they work. Apply the brakes and listen for noise and feel for any vibrations (noise or vibrations would indicate brake work may need to be performed). Test drive the vehicle for at least 10 minutes and or 5 to 10 miles of driving. You need to warm up the engine and transmission to get a sense if they’re working properly. Listen for knocks, bangs, or any other sound that’s loud or odd. Once the vehicle is warmed up, bring it back to the lot and let it run. You should then open the hood and listen for any noises while the vehicle is running.

You should also look at what’s coming out of the tailpipe. You should see some water dripping out, but look for any smoke. Also, take your hand and hold it behind the pipe and let the exhaust gases hit it for a few seconds. When you pull your hand away, feel for any grease or oil. If your hand feels greasy, there’s a good likelihood the engine is burning oil (not unusual for a car with more than 100k miles) or may have a coolant leak (if so, walk away).

Last, if it’s an automatic, check the shifting of the transmission by holding your foot on the brake and repeatedly shifting from drive into neutral into reverse and then back. Do this three or four times. If at any point you feel and hear any hard shudder, you should probably have it looked at.

Ideally, if you’re serious about this car, you would take it to a mechanic rather than do all of the above.

Finally, if its on a lot, find out where it came from and ask the dealer if they can show you a repair or maintenance bill. Most dealers will inspect and perform routine maintenance on a vehicle before they sell it.

If it’s a private owner, ask for all maintenance records and review them. Look for evidence of a recurring problem.

Finally, if the vehicle passes your mechanical inspection, ask for and pull your own CarFax report. Most dealers will provide these free of charge. Private owners may have pulled one first as a selling feature.

My best advice — watch out for private owners. While most are honest, a lot of them will try to trick you into buying their problem. Best bet is to spend $50 to $100 and get a vehicle inspected by a mechanic before buying.

Q: 2 car related questions for a 1999 Buick Century: My engine steams when it rains, is this normal?
Of course I always think it’s on fire. Second question: I always feel like my engine smells bad after I drive it, like a burning tupperware smell. Is this normal? (the smell, not the fact that I smell it). Just had it serviced and they said I am good and everything is fine and my car will last through winter. But I just need someone to verify this. Thanks!

A: Unless your getting an excessive amount of water thrown on the engine while driving, it sounds normal to me. Any hot engine will throw steam off when water splashes on it.
As far as the smell goes, its possible that you have oil seeping out and burning against the hot motor or exhaust. Take a good look around to make sure no wires or hoses are touching the hot areas of the motor and exhaust. Also, take it to a car wash and wash the engine off thoroughly.
That might help with the fumes.
