Q: What is difference between driving a petrol car and a diesel one?
I have been driving a petrol car for a long time, and now I have got a diesel car. When I asked between the difference between the two, the car dealer went into lengthy discussions about how the engine technology is different. I am not interested in knowing that. I want to know how it will be different for me as a driver. What care specfic to diesel car I need to take while driving?
A: A diesel drives pretty much the same as a petrol car except for the fact that it has a lot more torque. Other than that, the maintenance schedule is a little different, and you have to let the glow plugs warm up on cold mornings (an indicator light on the dash will tell you when it is safe to start the car). Plus, a vehicle with a diesel engine typically gets better gas mileage, and lasts a lot longer than its petrol counterpart.
Q: Car advice/discussion: I have a 6 month old and I was planning to trade my 2 door car in on a 4 door or van..
But the 2 door seems to work fine so far. How many of you are in the same boat? I have the present car paid for and it’s not worth much, but it still words great and looks great. We do have a 4door car also. I think I might just keep the 2 door for a year or two and see what happens.
A: Keep the car you have. One of the biggest ’syndromes’ I see hit new parents is the ‘It’s OK for me and my wife, but not for my baby’ and then go into debt buying a new car(s), redoing the house, paying for pre-school etc. Save your money and enjoy it on something that you will definitely get more satisfaction out of like an emergency savings account or a family or mom & dad only vacation.
Q: Is there any benefit of getting nice rims on a car other than aesthetic value?
I was talking to a friend and we got into a discussion about rims on car tires. We saw an SUV with huge rims and we both kind of asked each other if huge rims like that give an SUV any benefit other than the aesthetic value and making the car look cool.
So… is there any benefit to huge rims on a car other an aesthetic value and if so, what are they?
A: It depends on how big. Putting an 18″ wheel on a mustang shortens the sidewall of the tire but not so far that it kills ride quality. This helps improve handling and sharpness. Put some 22″ wheels on SUV’s, they increase stopping distances, reduce the load capacity, increase chances of a tire blowout, ruin the ride quality and generally make a big SUV into generally a rolling death machine. This is why I advocate making wheels over a certain size illegal.
Q: When selling a car, should you be firm, flexible in Price discussion when you are already giving a good price?
What should be my attitude in General when selling my car please.
A: Depending on the condition of the car,I set asking price higher than the amount I want.If I want $1500.00,I’ll ask $2000 and let them haggle the price down but I never go below the price I want.If you ask 2000,they will think they got a deal at 1500.Besides,unless your in a hurry, there’s always a buyer out there. If you want to unload it quick, clean and wax it .Some times a cheap set of good rims will sell the car.Make sure you include that it’s as-is in both copy’s of the bill of sale and cash up front, always.
Q: If Libbie’s can ban hands free phone discussions while driving, can they ban “in car” conversations?
http://theweek.com/article/index/208298/banning-cell-phones-in-cars-the-governments-draconian-plan
It seems to be an emotional issue. I wrote the question about “hands free phone discussions”, which are very much like having a conversation with another person in your car while you drive. If the passenger is in the back seat, does the government say “if we see you talking while driving, you’ll be punished”?
A: You little sweeties who can’t keep the phone off their ears will now experience what liberal big brothers can do. They will ban talking period while driving. Don’t think they can’t make the car kill all phone calls if they want to and they do know what is best for you.
Q: Does an inboard boat engine turn the opposite direction than a car engine?
I always thought that if the engine went out on an inboard boat that I could replace it with a car engine. Someone told me the other day just during a general discussion that that wasn’t possible because the engine ran in the opposite direction. Is this true?
A: No, but you don’t want to put a car engine in as it is not marinized. Marine engines are designed to work in enclosed spaces..aka they are built no to catch fire.
Also they are designed to work under constant load and to resist corrosion in a humid environment. You could do it but the car engine would probably have a short life.
Q: which one is the most important for a single man, a house or a car?
I’m thinking to buy a car but this became a discussion title between my family and friends. I need your views..
A: Buy a house– but rent it out and use it as an investment. But, don’t live in it or you will end up married and giving it away to her in five years. Then rent a house with some friends (make sure your names not on the lease) or become a roommate. Because of all the money your saving on rent and the investment growing in the house–you can write off certain expenses, as in your office/bedroom and mileage to maintain your rental business –and get a great classic car that goes up in value. What is the point of having your cake–if you can’t enjoy it.
Q: Is there a certain car brand or type that is associated with homosexuals?
My friend and I were having a discussion about things that we think homosexuals like and could not come to an agreement on what type of car we guessed they would drive. As we are both hetero, we obviously have no idea what constitutes a “gay” car. Please help.
A: While a car cannot be gay, I think hybrids are the most likely target of gay jokes. Or Volkswagen Jettas.
Though, I bet there are plenty of gays with sweet cars.
Q: If I am insured on my own car fully comprehensive am I covered to drive 3rd party on any other car?
Basically me and my boyfriend have been having this discussion. He says that since he has got fully comprehensive insurance on his car he can drive any other car and he will have insurance cover but that it will just be 3rd party insurance. So for example even though he is not on my insurance policy for my car he could still drive it and he would be covered by 3rd party insurance as he has got fully comp insurance on his.
I don’t think this can be true – please can someone let me know?
Thanks for this – just to let you know that I am actually insuring him fully comp on my new car anyway as I would want anyone driving my car to be fully comp. We just wanted to know in case for any random reason we had to drive someone elses car.
A: you need to check your policy, mine states that I’m fully comp and can drive any other car and it is covered by me for 3rd party, but you have to make sure that the other car that you are driving has its own insurance or you are not covered, my hubby got caught out this way and got taken to court for not having insurance, so just confirm the terms with your insurance company before you drive another car
Q: My car was rear-ended recently. 3 kids were inside the car with me. Only a minor contusion on a kid’s head.
Her docter checked her out and nothing serious. The other two and myself have no visible injuries. But we were all shaken up.
The insurance of the driver called me and said it would pay for the repairs and car rental. But no discussion about medical or mental anguish or anxieties that we experienced after the accident.
In this kind of accident, does the insurance (AAA or triple A’s) pay a specific compensation for each person regardless of whether there are serious injuries or not?
Thanks.
A: Nope – you have to be injured to get paid for a bodily injury claim.
No payment for inconvenience, mental anxiety. If you don’t want to suffer the mental anxiety or inconvenience of being involved in a car wreck – don’t drive or ride in cars.
Let the adjuster know about the child that went to the dr. They will probably offer a small settlement to cover the bills.
Sorry – no free money for you.
You do realize that money grubbing attitudes like yours (I should get paid for injuries I did not have) is why everyone’s car insurance rates are so high.
Q: what impact on society and the environment do car crashes have?
the question is ”discussion of Physics and its impact on society or the environment in the context of car crashes”. i have a physics assignment and need help, please do.
A: all those “yucky” toxic chemicals from a car crash getting into the sewer systems/lakes/streams/etc, the impact of having to repair your car since you have to throw some parts away in the landfill, the drain on society when you the driver who hit you is uninsured and you don’t have enough to cover all the costs
Q: Relatively cheap, quick car?
Note: Please, i do not want this to turn into a tuner / muscle war as so many of these car discussions do, make this unbiased and objective please.
hey, I am thinking of getting a cheap car($3,000 – $6,000) that is also quick, but not necessarily fast(for i know i am not finding something truly fast within that price range). I am looking for something with a displacement of over 2.7 liters(sorry honda’s) for i know not many cars have a power to displacement ratio of over 100hp/liter even if tuned, so 1.8 integra’s are out of the question. No v8’s because of fuel, i was looking for a big I4, I6, or V6. The best i have found so far is a 1989 Porsche 944 turbo for $5,000 that makes 200 something hp stock. Just looking for a quick, fun, cheap daily driver. please do not say a civic, yes they are fun but are very slow even tuned( i have driven them).
Please, take this as a challenge to find something. I am not terribly worried about reliability, i fix things, but it is a small factor. A manual would be preferred , but not necessary.
Thanks for the advice PMack, i already figured that the Porsche would be more expensive but I’ve been told it is one of the best handling cars on the road and i just think it looks better(but that is just my opinion) than a Mustang or Camaro. I had a 3800 in an old’s 88 but i blew it up, so i might not go with that engine again although i did like its performance. I have ways of fixing the Porsche without using Porsche parts for 60% of the problems it will face. I will however look out for a Firebird now that you mention it, and mabey i will go with the v8!?
A: You need to look at the big picture.
You say no V8 because of mileage, but you are considering a 944 Turbo? Do you realize that the repair costs for any Porsche are so much higher than a Mustang that almost anything that you need for the Porsche will make the Mustang cheaper. You can easily drop 10K in repairs on a 5K 944 turbo.
Don’t focus too much on mileage – you might spend (a little) more at the pump for a Z28 Camaro or Mustang GT, but if you need anything for the Porsche, the mileage advantage will go right out the window. The Mustang or Camaro will be just as quick (or quicker) and WAY cheaper to keep on the road overall. The 944 Turbo isn’t that much better (if any) than a Camaro or Mustang anyway, and you know any Turbo has to have premium to run well, right?
My pick for you? Mustang GT with a stick, sturdy and reliable, and easy to get parts for it.
Q: Can you install a BOV on a supercharged car?
Me and my friends got into a pretty heated discussion the other day over whether or not you can put a blow off valve on a supercharged car. I have a Eaton M62 roots style supercharger with big boost kit, and I really cant find anything on the web on if you can do it or not, and if so how would you install it?
A: The only time you can use a blow off valve is if the supercharger (or turbocharger) is before the throttle body (or carburetor)
the whole purpose of a blow off valve is to reduce air reflection off of the throttle body (or butterflies in the carburetor) causing a surge against the compressor, slowing the unit (in the case of a turbocharger), or just adding undue stress against it (as you’d see in a supercharger).
Q: Is the car industry going to change soon?
A few days ago I posed a question about the Gov being responsible for not only rising fuel costs but also asking if people think they should be behind the technology drive in finding alternatives to petrol. Interesting discussion and some good answers although some tend to go on the defensive anytime you mention the word Gov.
Anyway, I want to know when the buiness sector (mainly the car manfactures) are going to speed up this process of finding and dedicating alternative cars. Yes there are hybrids and so forth out there but there are no real savings. The price of a hybrid is such that I would not see any savings on fuel vs. extra cost of the car for many years down the road.
Is anyone working on something else? Hybrids are great, but lets be honest, I can’t see spending an extra 5 to 7 thousand dollars on a car that is going to save me a few pennies at the pump. Lets develop cars that don’t run on gas at all. How about that?
A: I’ve heard what I believed to be an urban legend about someone inventing an incredibly fuel-efficient engine only to be threatened and have it taken by thugs hired by the auto/petroleum industries. These days, after what I’ve heard and read, I’m beginning to think it could actually be possible. In any case, the US doesn’t have the military resources to keep making war on every country that has petroleum reserves.
We really need to wean ourselves off petroleum and replace it as a fuel with something renewable and not so expensive. I know that some companies are working on tropical oils as an alternative to petrochemicals. I hope they’re not too slow about it.
Or maybe there’s something no-one’s even thought about yet. As you said, cars that don’t run on gas at all. This is why we need strong science education, so we can produce competent thinkers, discoverers, and inventors!
Q: Are there any proven devices that allow a car to run on tap water?
There are ebooks on ebay that purport to educate readers on how to run a car on tap water. The ebay seller has positive feedbacks. However, discussion threads on Goggle Groups indicate that the tap water power energy is “snake oil” — so which is really true?
A: This is a scientific impossiblity. The cr_p you read about “monoatomic hydrogen”, brown’s gas, etc are just stuff and nonsense.
OTH, here’s a car that can run on river water:
